Things to Do in Brevard, NC: Vacation Ideas Beyond the Trails

August 23, 2026/in Blog, Family Fun

Brevard, North Carolina is known as a gateway to Pisgah National Forest and one of the best places in Western North Carolina for hiking, waterfalls, mountain biking, and other outdoor adventures. But you don’t have to spend your entire vacation on the trail.

Downtown Brevard is just a short drive from Pisgah National Forest and offers a different way to experience the area. Spend an afternoon browsing locally owned shops and galleries, grab a meal or a locally roasted coffee, listen to live music, explore the area’s history, or simply wander the charming streets in search of one of Brevard’s famous white squirrels.

So, when you’re ready to take a break from your hiking boots, here are some of our favorite things to do in Brevard, NC beyond the trails.

Explore Downtown Brevard

Downtown Brevard is compact, walkable, and full of locally owned businesses. Spend an afternoon wandering along Main Street and the surrounding blocks, where you’ll find boutiques, outdoor shops, galleries, cafés, restaurants, and plenty of local character.

It’s also a great place to pick up a souvenir that isn’t your typical vacation T-shirt. Look for locally made art, handmade goods, jewelry, books, and other finds from Western North Carolina artists and makers.

And keep an eye out for Brevard’s most famous residents: white squirrels. The town’s unusual white squirrel population has become one of its most beloved symbols, and spotting one is practically a Brevard rite of passage.

Discover Brevard’s Creative Side

Brevard has a surprisingly vibrant arts community for a small mountain town.

Downtown galleries showcase work from local and regional artists, while the Brevard Lumberyard Arts District offers another opportunity to experience the creative side of town. The former lumberyard has become a hub for artists, studios, galleries, and creative businesses.

For an especially fun time to visit, look for local gallery events and art walks throughout the year. In September, the annual Brevard Plein Air Festival brings juried artists outdoors to paint the landscapes and character of the area, culminating in a downtown Wet Paint Art Show & Sale.

Catch a Concert at Brevard Music Center

If your idea of a mountain vacation includes live music, don’t miss Brevard Music Center.

The renowned summer music venue brings classical performances, guest artists, orchestras, and other musical performances to its beautiful outdoor campus. The setting alone is worth the visit, especially on a warm summer evening when you can settle in and enjoy music surrounded by the mountains.

Look for Live Music Around Town

Brevard’s music scene extends well beyond the Brevard Music Center.

Throughout the year, you can find live music at local venues, breweries, restaurants, festivals, and outdoor events. Summer brings particularly lively programming, but there’s something happening throughout much of the year.

Experience Brevard’s Festivals and Events

One of the best ways to experience Brevard is to plan your visit around one of its local events.

Brevard’s beloved White Squirrel Weekend takes over downtown each Memorial Day weekend with live music, vendors, food, craft beverages, and family-friendly activities. The town also hosts events celebrating music, art, food, and the outdoors throughout the year.

In December, Light Up the Night transforms downtown Brevard into a festive holiday celebration, complete with the official tree lighting, live performances, ice skating, hayrides, food trucks, holiday shopping, and more. It’s a particularly fun time to experience Brevard’s small-town charm

Events change from year to year, so check the current calendar before your visit.

Make Time for a Good Meal

After a morning exploring Pisgah National Forest, there’s nothing better than slowing down over a good meal.

Brevard’s food scene includes everything from casual cafés and bakeries to restaurants, breweries, and spots perfect for an afternoon treat. Grab coffee before heading out for the day, stop downtown for lunch, or make dinner part of your evening plans. A leisurely ice cream stop or milkshake at a classic local spot can be just as memorable as another stop on your hiking itinerary.

Wind Down With a Local Beer

Western North Carolina is famous for its craft beer scene, and Brevard has plenty of its own personality when it comes to local brews.

After a day of hiking, mountain biking, or exploring waterfalls, stop by one of Brevard’s breweries or taprooms for a locally made beer and a chance to relax. Many local breweries also offer food, outdoor seating, live music, or other events, making them an easy addition to a laid-back Brevard evening.

Visit the Transylvania Heritage Museum

Want to learn more about the place you’re visiting? Spend some time at the Transylvania Heritage Museum in downtown Brevard.

The museum explores the history of Transylvania County and the people who have called the area home. It’s an easy addition to a downtown afternoon and a good option when you want something slower-paced or when you’re searching for a rainy day activity.

Take a Scenic Drive

Not every mountain adventure needs to involve a hike.

Hop in the car and explore some of the scenic roads surrounding Brevard. Scenic Highway 276 winds through Pisgah National Forest and the Scenic 276 Arts Corridor, or head up to the Blue Ridge Parkway for sweeping mountain vistas and plenty of scenic overlooks along the way. Build your own adventure with waterfall stops, local art, roadside views, and a leisurely lunch in town.

Slow Down at Pilot Cove

One of the best parts of a Brevard, NC vacation is knowing you don’t have to fill every hour.

After a day of waterfalls, shopping, galleries, live music, or exploring downtown, come back to Pilot Cove and slow down. Grab a drink, relax on your deck, cook dinner, or simply enjoy being surrounded by the forest.

That’s the beauty of staying in Brevard: adventure is close when you want it, but so is a slower pace.

Brevard Is More Than a Trailhead

Hiking and waterfalls may be what first bring you to Brevard, but they’re only part of the experience.

Spend a morning exploring Pisgah National Forest, an afternoon wandering downtown, an evening listening to live music, and the next day discovering a new waterfall or local gallery. Mix adventure with good food, art, music, and plenty of time to simply enjoy the mountains.

There’s no one right way to experience Brevard, and that’s exactly what makes it such a great place to visit.

Ready to explore Brevard beyond the trails? Stay at Pilot Cove, located at the entrance to Pisgah National Forest and just minutes from downtown Brevard.
