Fall Hiking Near Pilot Cove: 6 Must-See Destinations

October 5, 2025/in Blog, Family Fun, Hiking, Local Trails

As autumn paints Western North Carolina in vibrant hues of red, gold, and orange, there’s no better time to explore the trails. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, climbing to panoramic mountain vistas, or strolling through peaceful woodland meadows, these nearby hikes offer unforgettable fall experiences.

Here are some of our favorite fall hiking adventures within an hour of Pilot Cove.

1. Rainbow Falls – Gorges State Park

Distance from Pilot Cove: ~20 miles
Hike Length: 3.5 miles round-trip (moderate)

Rainbow Falls lives up to its name, especially in the fall when brilliant foliage surrounds its 150-foot cascade. Located in Gorges State Park, the trail to Rainbow Falls leads you through a scenic forest, past Turtleback and Hidden Falls before arriving at the main attraction. The mist from the falls often catches the sunlight just right, creating dazzling rainbows.

This is a great half-day hike that blends water features and autumn color along a moderately challenging, well-marked trail.

2. Looking Glass Falls – Pisgah National Forest

Distance from Pilot Cove: ~15 minutes
Hike Length: No hiking required—viewable from the roadside, with a short path to the base

Easily one of the most photographed waterfalls in North Carolina, Looking Glass Falls is a must-see, especially during peak leaf season. Its accessibility makes it ideal for families, casual explorers, or anyone short on time.

A stone staircase leads down from the parking area to the base of the falls, where you can feel the mist and take in the striking contrast between the clear water and colorful leaves all around.

Pro Tip: Visit early in the morning or on a weekday to avoid crowds and enjoy peaceful views.

3. Graveyard Fields – Blue Ridge Parkway, Milepost 418.8

Distance from Pilot Cove: ~45 minutes
Hike Length: 1.3-mile loop (with optional spur to Upper Falls)

One of the Parkway’s most iconic fall destinations, Graveyard Fields is known for early-turning foliage, mountain views, and two waterfalls—Lower and Upper Falls. The easy loop trail winds through open meadows and dense forest, offering brilliant color at nearly every turn.

Due to its popularity, parking can be limited—plan to arrive early or visit on a weekday if possible.

4. Devil’s Courthouse – Blue Ridge Parkway, Milepost 422.4

Distance from Pilot Cove: ~50 minutes
Hike Length: 0.5 miles (steep, paved trail)

Just a few minutes from Graveyard Fields, Devil’s Courthouse offers one of the best bang-for-your-buck hikes in WNC. The short but steep climb to the summit reveals panoramic views across four states—North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia.

Rich in Cherokee legend and ecological diversity, the peak is also home to rare alpine plants and nesting peregrine falcons. Combine this hike with Graveyard Fields for a memorable day on the Parkway.

5. Art Loeb Trail

Trail Access: Davidson River, Black Balsam Knob, and Graveyard Fields
Trail Length: ~30 miles total (choose your own adventure)

The Art Loeb Trail is a National Recreation Trail known for its high-elevation ridgelines, open balds, and sweeping vistas. Whether you’re looking for a multi-day backpacking trip or a short day hike, this trail delivers some of the most breathtaking scenery in Western North Carolina.

For a fall hike with major visual rewards, try the section between Black Balsam Knob and Tennent Mountain—you’ll walk above the treetops with unobstructed views of brilliant autumn foliage below.

6. Sam’s Knob

Distance from Pilot Cove: ~50 minutes
Hike Length: 2.5 miles round-trip (moderate)

Located near Black Balsam Knob, Sam’s Knob is often overlooked—and that’s part of what makes it special. This high-elevation hike starts at Black Balsam Road and takes you through a beautiful mountain meadow before a moderate climb to the summit.

At over 6,000 feet, Sam’s Knob offers panoramic views of surrounding ridgelines blanketed in fall color. The trail is peaceful, well-maintained, and ideal for a quiet autumn hike with epic rewards at the top.

Pro Tip: Go early for solitude and the soft light of morning sun sweeping across the mountain landscape.

Honorable Mention: Linville Gorge & Linn Cove Viaduct – Blue Ridge Parkway, Milepost 316

Distance from Pilot Cove: ~1.5–2 hours (best for a day trip)
Hike Options: Easy to strenuous

Though a bit farther from Pilot Cove, Linville Gorge—nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the East”—is one of the most dramatic landscapes on the East Coast. Towering cliffs, vibrant hardwood forests, and the winding Linville River create a cinematic setting for fall hiking.

Nearby, Linville Falls is easily accessible and features multiple viewpoints with minimal effort. And don’t skip the Linn Cove Viaduct, a masterwork of engineering that hugs the side of Grandfather Mountain and provides classic Parkway leaf-peeping views.

Perfect for a day trip if you’re looking to explore farther afield.

Plan Your Fall Hiking Getaway

Pilot Cove offers modern forest lodging at the doorstep of Pisgah National Forest and minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway—giving you easy access to these trails and dozens more. After a day immersed in crisp mountain air and stunning color, return to a cozy cabin surrounded by peaceful woods.

Whether you’re planning a weekend leaf-peeping getaway or an active fall adventure, let Pilot Cove be your perfect basecamp.
